This letter has been cannibalized from ones past, which is why there are so many prompts in some places. (They were for longer-form works, but I hope this style of letter can still be helpful to you!) Please don’t feel a need to follow all of my prompts or to shove all of my likes into a fic as I know the list is pretty long. In my letter, I write “Kunieda Kei” to refer to Kei's announcer/public persona and “Kei” for the private personality he only displays to Ushio.
I love, love, LOVE the dynamic between Ushio and Kei. I love the way they bicker with each other and yearn for each other and complement each other. I love everything about Ushio and how real he feels to me, like a person I'd actually meet out on the street. On the other hand, something about Kei's double-sided nature and how hard he works to succeed and be liked by others makes him almost cartoony to me. I adore the dichotomy of his character and all of the complexities that come with that— how Kunieda Kei handles a situation vs the real Kei. How he's so handsome and adored then turns around and bad-mouths people! 😂 I can relate to him in some ways, which makes me happy.
I love situations where Kei or Ushio have to confront feelings or new situations the other is involved with. Where they learn things about each other. My favorite moments are those where Kei asks Ushio about his work and he opens up about it. I was reading one of the light novels recently (or an extra, actually,) and Ushio said there wasn't much point to telling Kei about his work because it would be hard to describe what goes on in his head. But I wanna know!! Kei rants about his job to Ushio all the time and Ushio loves to listen to it but I want there to be a day where it's about Ushio for once and he's the one monologuing XD (And while on the subject of jobs, I would love to know more about both of theirs, though absolutely Kei’s in particular. I have some friends in TV and the whole process wows and amazes me!)
I go feral over those rare, tender moments where Kei says how he's really feeling and Ushio accepts those feelings. Ushio knows deep down how Kei truly feels but I do enjoy those “all is lost” moments where Kei is forced to either be upfront and honest about something he's vulnerable about or he loses everything. And he always shows up at the final hour before it’s too late to patch things up with Ushio.
Some ideas:
- Kei is confronted with a situation where he has to address his relationship with Ushio to other people or is caught with Ushio in public
- A date (and sex) with Ushio and Kunieda Kei where Kei is in his sweet character the whole time. Maybe Ushio asked him to do it and after enough puppy-dog eyes Kei caved and now he’s regretting it when Ushio deliberately pushes his buttons or says things to try and provoke Kei into showing his true nature. Does Ushio find it weird? Maybe at the end of the night he feels bad for putting Kei through what he knows is an uncomfortable situation and Kei ends up getting him back somehow.
- In general I think it'd be fun to see more situations where Ushio helps Kunieda Kei stand up for himself when he has to be polite for his public image
- I love moments where Kei's and Ushio's work intersects or when one discovers the other's work around the city or at home (such as a project Ushio has been working on for the news station airs or Ushio sees Kei making a surprise appearance on a product at the grocery store or something).
- Literally any combination of the likes lists provided at the top but especially anything that puts Ushio in a position to tease Kei and bicker with him 🥺🥺
- Could you imagine getting dicked down in a studio after hours or Ushio indulging in humiliating Kei using one of Kei's fancy ties? 👀Kei wears suits all the time and I adore the thought of him wearing one mussed while Ushio does unspeakable things to him
- I would also love any NSFW content that puts Kei in less of a submissive/pillow princess sort of role and something more commanding. I ADORE it in the story, don’t get me wrong, but there’s very little focus on giving Ushio pleasure and he usually finds release in penetration but I think it’d be fun to see the roles reversed or the two competing more for roles in bed instead of Kei essentially laying back and letting it happen. And also, what is Ushio like in a submissive role? Is he shy or does he beg and cry? Would Kei lord it over his head?
- Ushio seems to run a bit of a jealous streak when it comes to Kunieda Kei and I would savor another situation like the one we got where Kei had lost his memory and the new sports announcer Tatsuki tried to make a pass at him. I like seeing Ushio fired up and protective of Kei. It would also be fun to see a situation where maybe Kunieda Kei encounters a classmate from his past who still harbors an old crush on him and Ushio has to be the one to tell them to back off since Kei is in his “public” persona and can't do it himself.
- In one of the shorts in “Off Air,” Kei and Ushio visited Kei's family for New Year's and I want more of that!! Kei told his parents they were dating and istg I almost fainted. But it was so short and I could definitely do with 10k more of Kei being Kei in front of not just Ushio but also his parents or Tatsuki! And also more of Ushio getting to know Kei’s family
- USHIO AND KEI LIVING TOGETHER!! Hello??? The domesticity of it all!!! At the very end of volume 3, they mention how it’d be a good idea to put up a separating curtain between Kei and Ushio’s apartments in the event that Ushio ever gets guests. Well, what happens when he gets guests? Does anyone question the fact that Kei lives next door? What if it’s Shitara-san, who is familiar with both of them? Even just in general, what does Tatsuki think of the development? How much does he make fun of Kei for it at work?
- I adored all the drama that came with the 3 volumes but the Off Air stuff is also so addicting to read. I LOVE the fluff and the lower stakes. (And the more frequent sex scenes, lol!) The author writes a lot of tropes I adore, like seeing how Ushio and Kei care for the other when he’s sick, the casualness of going home to Ushio’s bed or texting him whenever. Tatsuki teasing them and the little things they do for each other like indulge in favorite foods or trying to ask more personal questions every once in a blue moon to establish that deeper connection with each other. Makes me absolutely feral. Oh, Kei’s worried about Ushio and Ushio knows so he picks on Kei to show him he’s actually totally fine and there’s nothing to worry about? Oh, Ushio rents out a hotel room and takes Kei somewhere special because Ushio’s answer to stress is to do something spontaneous while Kei’s is to stick to routine? Oh, they casually tell each other “I love you?” You want my heart to melt!!!!!!! Just get married already, dammit!!

This manga could have stopped at having representation of a blind character but no, it had to go and give us a character who wears skirts and paints his nails and drives me insane in the most positive way!!! Like, two volumes was not enough. I wanted it to be *at least* twenty more chapters before ending with, “they moved in together.” Not that I’m not overjoyed for them but I thought, “Give me more drama! Give me the slowburn and cheesy romance tropes like misunderstandings and miscommunication, etc. etc.!” I know some people find such things repetitive or cumbersome, but honestly, it’s really thrilling to see how a character acts in different situations and how that develops their character and relationship. That’s why I love overdone tropes with refreshing new takes— it doesn’t matter if the characters are doing taxes. If you have the right characters and the right author, it could be interesting. (And I mean, c’mon. Tago would make taxes interesting!)
The manga had so many timeskips!! We get a lot of thought bubbles that say, “I’ve hung out with Tago four times now” or “This is my third date with Tago.” It’s ripe with opportunities to fill in those gaps with dialog and cute hand-holding and all that good stuff. If not writing missing scene fic, then I think there are also plenty of opportunities to write post-canon fic in a university setting. Living together presents its own set of new problems but also a chance for Tago to find more autonomy and independence than he ever did with his family, and as someone who is blind, he no doubt will have challenges to overcome and a new lifestyle to have to adjust to.
- I would love anything written from Tago’s perspective. Give me long, beautiful paragraphs about the other senses— describe to me what it is like for someone without sight. Or give me dialog-heavy passages focused on just talking because there’s nothing else to see. I wrote a oneshot with a series of scenarios ranging from doing things like folding laundry to Ogi painting Tago’s nails which could be expanded into an assortment of scenes for a fuller fic. I would even enjoy a canon rewrite of the manga but from Tago’s perspective and stretching into post-canon, depending on how much is needed to achieve the wordcount.
- Extra emphasis on the concept of exploring Japanese culture: After a stressful first year living together, Ogi and Tago arrange for a three-month summer vacation in the countryside / seaside village / etc. It’s a big adjustment for Tago, who isn’t used to the steep streets or the unfamiliar scents or the bustling evening market practically out their window. He has to adjust to the layout of the boarding house where they’re staying, which is accompanied by other boarders (who Tago definitely hasn’t bumped shoulders with before). But all the fun they have outweighs the stress — day trips to rare and popular spots alike, evenings out in nature, nights tangled in each other’s arms trying to stifle the sound of their lovemaking to not wake the roommates and falling asleep to the sound of crickets at night. In summary: As much “Ghibli vibes” as you can cram into one fic.
- Also, pls consider: Tago or Ogi wanting the trip to end in a marriage proposal and all the complications / thoughts that come with that throughout the trip.
- Tago’s worked hard and he’s made it into the university of his dreams. He’s moved in with Ogi, who is everything he could ask for in a partner. However, Tago develops worries he’ll fall behind in his classes (due to them simply being rigorous or not accomodating his disability) that leads to not having enough time with Ogi at home. When another student steps up to the plate offering to help with notetaking, Tago accepts. Ogi is less than enthused, eventually telling Tago of his insecurities and jealousy whenever Tago spends time with a classmate who has been apparently flirting with him the whole time; he’s just been too oblivious to notice.

* I would prefer this to be a gen story, but mentions of Taiga Hirasawa are fine. I don't mind if Arima is in a romantic or platonic relationship with him but I would prefer it not be the main focus of the story.
I loved reading Boy Meets Maria but it left me absolutely aching for more time with Arima Yuu. I felt like a starved orphan when the experience was over simply begging for more food! I love queer stories and this one in particular had so many interesting things happening in it which I wish had been expounded upon more, especially with Arima's experiences and his perspective on the world and his own gender and getting to see how it changes over the course of the story.
I want to know what his first day of school was like when he swapped the skirt in for trousers. How did he feel? How did the other students react? What were the days and months like leading up to his first time he performed onstage? And afterward, what did it take for him to learn how to dance so well to the point that he became "Maria"?
The setting as actors on a stage is particularly perfect for Arima given the many moments it either assists or interferes with his exploration of his gender identity. I would have loved to see more moments like that, more details about what it takes to act on stage or even aspects of the production I’d never considered before, like preparing props/the scene and casting actors. How long does it take? Since this is a high school operation, I am assuming the students have to prepare all of this themselves?
- After the canon events of Boy Meets Maria, Arima is still deep in the process of exploring his gender identity. Emboldened by Hirosawa and the others’ support, he wants to try a male role next, and begins rehearsing and acting with the rest of the drama club, much to their astonishment. They all say he’s good, that they didn’t know he had such talent for the stage. But the easier the script rolls off his tongue, the more he feels like he’s lost something. A part of him misses the dresses, it misses the ribbons and the boys’ heart eyes every time he danced onstage. He doesn’t know what to do— he thought he’d left that part behind or at least convinced it to occupy a smaller part of his life. But Arima is quickly discovering that being true to himself isn’t going to be that easy.
- Please expand more upon Arima's life in general, either before or during canon, giving us a perspective of his past struggles but also the successes he made along the way. He seems less embarrassed/hung up on the fact that he's gay or to some extent in a relationship with Taiga, even going so far as to take him on a date at the end of the story. Why doesn't it bother him? Does he have past experiences dating boys when he was dressed as a girl, or is it simply an aspect of his personality he had an easier time accepting for some other reason?

Starlight Brigade

More Strive all day every day. I fell fast and hard for his soft yet determined demeanor, his bravery and emotional reaction to having to leave his elder/parental figure behind to go save his planet. The designs for Starlight Brigade were inspired by Moebius, which I am not familiar with, but I got huge Nausicaä of the Valley vibes from the video and in one Twitter post, an artist mentioned some sources of inspiration for the artwork. There’s a bit of art here, here, and here.
Altogether, Strive’s universe is an amazing mixture of sci-fi and fantasy elements and I’m really curious to see how those blend together. I personally lean more in the direction of fantasy, again taking a lot of inspiration from the things Studio Ghibli has produced, but if you aren’t familiar, the best way I could put it is that I like sci-fi that stems from magic– things like ancient technology that doesn’t need a reason to work the way it does. And isn’t your typical über-modern, sleek spaceship but constructions that look more natural (round/softened shapes and corners, vines, maybe even ships or buildings that are “alive” and breathe or have organs, etc.).
I would not mind shipping for this fic and am generally the most interested in ships with similar physical builds (leaning twinkish), emotional (un)intelligence, and well-defined personalities, whether it be someone who is very brash, withdrawn, or what have you. A character with lots of rizz (aka charisma) is also absolutely welcome. I would prefer that the character be human or an alien with humanoid features. I love writing/reading ships of characters with very little dating experience who fall hard into a faithful relationship with the other half of the ship despite their inexperience. All the better if it’s a character who wasn’t even ever planning on getting married but their significant other is making them see things entirely differently.
Worldbuilding ideas:
- Culture: What do they eat? Do they have any seasonal traditions or customs? (Me being me, what about courting rituals?) What are Strive’s people’s beliefs/faith, if they have any? Any social nuances that could land you in hot water if you say the wrong thing or make the wrong gesture?
- Geography: How large is this planet? Does it rain? Is it more of a tundra situation, or are there grasslands/forests in other places? What’s the population of Strive’s hometown and are they the only people on this planet, or do they have trade routes with other groups? Does tourism exist?
- Biology: They bleed purple blood, as evidenced by Strive’s one injury. What’s up with that? Why are their ears so floof? Why is their skin blue, with some characters having two-toned skin (two shades of blue, one lighter)? Do they age like humans, or do they have a Yoda situation where it takes a long time to age?
- Magic: It looks like a lot of people have gemstones in their chests. Is it some sort of custom to get one then, as we saw Strive do as a child? Are these gemstones somehow connected to the fading light that was recovered?
- Misc.: How did these people survive on this desolate land? Maybe some creative thinking was at play there. What other races are there in the universe? Is there sunlight here or only the aurora borealis-eqsue lights?

- Things have been hectic ever since Strive decided to explore the galaxy with the Starlight Brigade. He scarcely has time to visit the home planet he had worked so hard to save, even having to spend holidays on the ship when there isn’t enough time to go back to see his family. The next time he does, however, a childhood friend has taken a renewed interest in their relationship, even going so far as to ask Strive if they could travel with him and the Starlight Brigade on their next mission. Strive’s elated at the prospect of having someone just like him flying around with them after so long accompanied by people who are admittedly very kind, but don’t feel as much like home as this friend does. Things change with time, however, as has Strive’s friend, and the last thing Strive wants is for them to act out brashly/ignorantly, putting themselves and the crew in danger.
- Moebius is still a fairly closed-off colony with little to no interaction with the rest of its neighboring planets, so when a human crash-lands there, everyone is ambivalent. The last outsiders who had come to help had saved the planet, but could every stranger be given such trust? Strive, who has become something of a local celebrity on Moebius, is asked to step in and help get the human back on their feet. Along the way, the human learns numerous things about Moebian culture and begins to realize that maybe being stranded on the planet isn’t such a bad thing if Strive is around…
- Strive returns home for a holiday and meets a historian who had come in from outside the solar system specifically to study the Moebian’s culture and oversee the proceedings. They insist they’re there just to be an observer, but as Strive and the stranger spend more time together, Strive invites them to experience things firsthand. Bonus points if the things Strive has to show them aren’t always holiday-centric but of a courting/mating nature, too, and the historian character is more alien than they first appear, with secrets of their own.
- Strive and the Starlight Brigade make an unexpected alliance with another fleet/space crew in order to handle a problem in the star systems and Strive takes a liking to a member of the other crew. (And the other person wants to get into Strive’s pants).
